Montmorency

The Montmorency is a type of cherry, believed to have been discovered by the ancient Romans growing along the shores of the Black Sea and noted for its sourness.

It's named after a suburb of Paris, which in turn is ultimately named after the Gallo–Roman person who owned the land in Roman times. He was called Maurentius, and Mons Maurentiacus (Mount Morentius) was a feature of the area.

The modern suburb is synonymous with the Montmorencys, who are one of France's oldest and most distinguished noble families. The first record of them dates from the 10th century AD, in the person of Bouchard I of Montmorency.
